Mudslide pours through Italian town

Cellars in Bardonecchia filled within minutes and cars were dragged for miles

A mudslide caused by a violent storm in the Alps sent a torrent of mud, debris and water through a small Italian town, submerging homes and dragging cars up to 10km, as locals celebrated their patron saint’s feast day on Sunday,

In videos shot by residents of Bardonecchia, near Turin, the torrent could be seen exploding through a gate and surging down a street, scattering passersby before surging like a tidal wave along a river in the centre of town, which is popular with mountain hikers in the summer.

Rescuers saved six people trapped in a caravan and the authorities gave shelter to dozens of locals who were flooded out of their homes after the slide hit at 9pm.
