Allies of the Philippines president, Rodrigo Duterte, are urging him to run for election as vice-president to his own daughter in an effort to extend his grip on power.

Duterte’s six-year term comes to an end next year and under the Philippines constitution he cannot run for a second time. Instead, plans are in train for him to run as vice-president with a co-operative presidential candidate — possibly his 43-year-old daughter, Sara Duterte.

“To those who are asking about his response, the answer is he would think about it,” President Duterte’s spokesman, Harry Roque, said. “On one hand, he said he has already served the country. On the other hand, he said he would think what would be the best for the country.”
