A Scottish island of 11 acres is up for auction with an asking price of £80,000, the same cost as a south London garage.

Only buyers with a longing for simple solitude need apply, though. Deer Island, or Eilean an Fheidh, on Loch Moidart in the west Highlands, is uninhabited, with no houses or amenities

The auctioneers describe the island as a “unique opportunity to purchase a space that can be enjoyed with zero chance of intrusion”.

Across a stretch of water is Eilean Shona, a tidal island owned by Vanessa Branson, 62, the sister of the business magnate Sir Richard. She and her husband, Robert Devereux, bought the island, described as “a car-free wilderness heaven”, for about £1.3 million in 1995.
