A UK government-owned train company has said its passengers would be allowed to potentially break the law by allowing them to follow England’s relaxed social distancing rules when they enter Scotland.

London North Eastern Railway, which runs services between London and destinations including Edinburgh, Inverness and Aberdeen, issued messages to customers saying: “We have made the decision to operate under English guidance, with regards to social distancing on cross-border services, to provide consistency to customers.

“Therefore, customers may be seated next to each other when travelling from July 19 onwards.”

The operator initially claimed Transport Scotland, the Scottish government’s agency, had agreed to the approach but was forced to withdraw the statement.
