It is the stuff of which dreams are made: a holiday home by the Spanish coast, in the French countryside or on a Greek island. But Britons with properties in Europe risk having their stays at their place in the sun cut short by Brexit.

From January, UK residents will be allowed to remain for a maximum of only three months within each six-month period within the Schengen free movement zone of which most EU countries are members, regardless of whether a post-Brexit trade deal is done in the coming days.

This means someone who spends, say, July and August in Provence or Tuscany has the right to remain for just one more month for the rest of that year, whether for work or leisure,
