A rebellion by French schoolgirls against what they denounce as sexist dress codes banning skimpy clothing has embarrassed head teachers and split President Macron’s government.
Pupils across the country defied school rules by arriving at their lycées (sixth-form colleges) wearing miniskirts and crop tops. They demanded the right to dress as they wished and said the case against revealing attire — that it was likely to distract male pupils and staff, disrupt lessons and inhibit serious studying — suggested they were viewed as sexual objects by those who should be taught to control themselves.
“It’s not women who should get dressed but men who should get educated,” said one petition, which has obtained more than 5,000 signatures.
