A Russian man shot dead five young people for talking too loudly and waking his child, investigators said yesterday.

The 32-year-old man got into an argument with the group because they were being noisy under the balcony of his apartment in the village of Yelatma in Ryazan region, 120 miles southeast of Moscow.

He then grabbed his rifle and fired on the four men and a woman, aged between 22 and 31. They all died at the scene. The suspect fled after the attack, leaving his weapon behind. Investigators said he was detained several hours later and a criminal case was opened on a charge of multiple murder.

Local media said that the man, who worked at a psychiatric clinic, was on paternity leave
