The co-founder of Extinction Rebellion complained about living in a cockroach-infested cell with inadequate vegan food as he was released on bail to face trial for allegedly plotting to vandalise trades union properties.

Roger Hallam, 54, was arrested last month and remanded in custody amid claims a Green Party member “infiltrated” a meeting and passed details to police of an alleged plot to throw paint over the buildings of four unions.

Mr Hallam, a former organic farmer and sociologist who helped set up the pressure group in 2018, was arrested alongside four others who have all worked with Extinction Rebellion.

Mr Hallam appeared yesterday via videolink at Wood Green crown court where he denied a charge of conspiracy to commit criminal damage.
