A television broadcaster well-known for his near-hysterical tirades on screen and fanatical devotion to India’s government has been arrested in Mumbai, accused of driving a local man and his mother to suicide.

Arnab Goswami, the firebrand head of the right-wing broadcaster Republic TV, was seized at his home by Mumbai police this morning. Mobile phone footage showed the journalist struggling with officers before he was taken away.

Mr Goswami, 47, has been charged over his alleged role in the suicide of an interior designer, Anvay Naik, and his mother, who killed themselves in 2018, claiming that the Republic boss had refused to pay a huge outstanding bill for the design of his studio.
