God TV, a worldwide evangelical Christian television network, has been taken off the air in Israel after being accused of trying to convert Jews.

The network, which is based in Plymouth and says it reaches hundreds of millions of Christians around the world, last month claimed to be the first channel to broadcast the Gospel of Christ to the people of Israel in Hebrew.

That claim however put it at odds with the broadcasting authorities. Although there is no ban on proselytising to adults or conversion in Israel, the national Council for Cable and Satellite Broadcasting said that it was a breach of the channel’s application, which had specified its target audience was the country’s Christian minority.
