Goods could pile up at Dublin Port if Irish businesses do not quickly prepare for Brexit, a leading accountancy body has warned.

Chartered Accountants Ireland said yesterday that Irish businesses should act on the assumption that the UK and EU will fail to reach a free trade agreement before the end of the year.

However, it said that even if a deal is reached, Irish companies exporting to, or importing from, the UK will soon have to fill out customs declarations.

Cróna Clohisey, the public policy lead at the organisation, told The Times: “Come January 2021, we will have loads of goods at Dublin Port with nowhere to go if customs returns are not done properly.”
