Boris Johnson cast fresh doubt on summer foreign holidays today by warning it will be “a difficult year for travel”.

The prime minister insisted the priority must be keeping people safe from variants entering the country.

He also dealt a fresh blow to the industry by suggesting that international travel will not return to normal until next year.

On a visit to a laboratory in Hertfordshire today, Johnson said: “I want to stress that this is going to be — whatever happens — a difficult year for travel.

“There will be hassle, there will be delays, I am afraid, because the priority has got to be to keep the country safe and stop the virus coming back in.”
