At least 50 elected Democrats in Texas fled the state yesterday saying they were prepared to stay away for weeks to scupper a special session called by Republicans to pass voting reforms.

Many of the state house’s 67 Democrats went to Washington to break the two-thirds quorum required for the Texas legislature to vote. They also want to put pressure on President Biden to help in their battle against a bill they say will restrict the right to vote.

Biden, 78, intends to outline today his opposition to Republican voting bills already passed in at least 14 states, inspired by Donald Trump’s claims that the 2020 election was rigged. Many aim to strictly regulate early and postal voting or to toughen up ID requirements, which
