Thousands of mink culled to try to quell a mutant coronavirus outbreak in fur farms are being incinerated to generate heat and electricity for households.

Denmark ordered the slaughter of up to 14 million mink in autumn after 12 humans became infected with a variant of the virus thought to be more dangerous than its original form.

The cull descended into farce as it emerged that the measure was illegal, leading to the resignation of the country’s agriculture minister.

Weeks later a large number of mink corpses began to surface from a shallow grave in a military training zone, buoyed by a build-up of gases.

A biomass plant announced yesterday that it would use at least 30 tonnes of dead mink.

They have been mixed
