Germany’s most senior prosecutor has issued a warrant for a Russian hacker who allegedly paralysed the Bundestag with a cyberattack five years ago on the orders of the Kremlin.

Dimitri Badin, 29, is suspected of stealing 16GB of sensitive data from the German parliament, including files from Angela Merkel’s office.

He is also on a list of 12 alleged Russian spies wanted by the FBI for illegally obtaining 19,000 emails from the Democratic party during the 2016 US presidential election campaign.

The German authorities believe Mr Badin is a member of Fancy Bear, also known as APT28, a prolific hacker unit supposedly run by the GRU, one of Russia’s two leading spy agencies.
