Harry Maguire shouted “f*** the Greek police” and “f*** the Greek civilisation” as he resisted arrest in Mykonos, one of the officers who detained him has claimed.

The 27-year-old footballer, who is captain of Manchester United, has been granted a full retrial after being convicted of assaulting and attempting to bribe police who tried to break up a bar brawl on the island. However, Ioannis Paradissis, the prosecutor who brought the case against Maguire, said a statement from an arresting officer presented in court last week casts doubt on the footballer’s claims that he thought he was being kidnapped.
