The dukes of Sussex and Cambridge issued separate statements last night to pay tribute to Prince Philip as their family hoped for a reconciliation between the brothers.
Prince William called his grandfather an “extraordinary man” who “would want us to get on with the job” — interpreted by some commentators as being directed at Harry. The Duke of Sussex called his grandfather “cheeky right ’til the end”.
Harry had accused his brother during the Oprah Winfrey interview of being “trapped” in his role. However, William’s talk of getting “on with the job” was taken by some observers as a riposte and a reference to the Sussexes’ decision to step back from their roles as senior royals.
