First he was deluged with ladies’ knickers. Now Jean Castex, the French prime minister, is being bombarded with second-hand shoes as a protest by shopkeepers gathers pace.

The shopkeepers are angry about being forced to close their doors by the Covid-19 lockdown.

Last week the government outlined a four-stage plan to relax rules to curb the virus, which is still circulating at high levels in France. A gradual lifting of the ban on domestic travel begins tomorrow.

But, much to the fury of their owners, shops deemed “non-essential” must wait until May 19 to reopen, the same day as restaurants and cafés will be able to start serving customers on their terraces, and museums, theatres, cinemas and sports clubs also resume operations.
