Concerns have been raised about the prospect of people from high-risk Covid areas on the mainland being encouraged to travel to an island community for testing.

A coronavirus test centre has been set up by the UK government in Rothesay on the Isle of Bute.

However, residents claim that people are being sent from the mainland communities of Greenock and Port Glasgow, where the infection rate is far higher. The Inverclyde towns remain under the strictest Covid-19 restrictions because of the high spread in the central belt.

Residents voiced concerns on a BBC Radio Scotland phone-in yesterday. One said: “During the major lockdown on the Isle of Bute we were given quite severe travel restrictions. The reason given was that we were a vulnerable community
