Boris Johnson faces an “impossible” task finding a new advocate-general for Scotland willing to set aside their moral duty to uphold international law and defend his allegedly illegal Brexit bill, a leading Scottish advocate has said.

Kay Springham QC said the resignation of Lord Keen of Elie over Mr Johnson’s plan to override the UK’s Brexit treaty poses a moral dilemma for any Scottish advocate lined up to replace him. Lord Keen, who was one of three government law officers who ruled that Mr Johnson’s proposal was potentially in breach of international law, informed Downing Street of his plan to step down on Wednesday.
