The proportion of Britons wearing a face covering outdoors has trebled to more than nine in 10, official figures show.

It represents a dramatic change in behaviour as millions seek to protect themselves and others from the coronavirus, experts said.

Two months ago, in its weekly survey of the social impact of the virus, the Office for National Statistics found 30% of people in England, Scotland and Wales wore a face covering between June 4 and June 7.

Last week, the ONS survey of 2,500 adults found the proportion using a mask when leaving their home had jumped to 96%.
