An elderly woman starved to death while health and social care services were buckling under the strain of coronavirus in the first fatality from lack of food in at least 20 years.

The death of the woman in her 90s was among a slew of deaths from conditions not seen for decades.

Charities say helplines have been inundated with “harrowing stories” from pensioners who talk of empty cupboards and problems with grocery deliveries, particularly among those who are not online.

Brian Sloan, chief executive of Age Scotland, described the starvation death as “desperately sad” but said that it highlights the scale of pensioner malnutrition across Scotland.

“It should shake us all to our core that in 2020, someone in Scotland starved to death,” he said.
