An extradition request from Russia has been terminated because its officials failed to respond to concerns about prison conditions and the right to a fair trial.

Igor Khatlamadzhiyev, 37, was wanted over several alleged thefts and robberies in Russia between November 1997 and February 1998, when he is thought to have gone into hiding. He has two Irish-born children and was put on an international wanted list in 2004.

Detectives from the garda extradition unit arrested him in August 2018 and he was taken to the High Court in Dublin.

Mr Justice Donald Binchy, the High Court judge in charge of international extradition cases, heard his case in November but sought further assurance from Russia that he would have a fair trial and adequate conditions.
