Ethiopia is on the brink of civil war after the prime minister sent troops to respond to an alleged attack on an army base by separatist forces in the breakaway region of Tigray.

Abiy Ahmed, the leader who won the Nobel peace prize, accused the regional government of crossing a “red line”. He claimed that the attack resulted in “many martyrs, injuries and property damage”. In social media posts he called on Ethiopians to support the federal offensive.

The use of troops marks an escalation in tensions that have simmered for months between Mr Abiy’s government and the region’s ruling party, the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF), which previously governed the country. A civil war could further destabilise the Horn of Africa, one of
