Boris Johnson described the overthrowing of Margaret Thatcher 30 years ago as a “terrible event” on a par with the assassination of Julius Caesar.

Newly-released personal papers reveal, however, that when he was a young and ambitious journalist the prime minister played an unwitting role in her downfall.

Mr Johnson was the Brussels correspondent for The Daily Telegraph during the build-up to Mrs Thatcher’s resignation in November 1990.

Papers released by the Margaret Thatcher Foundation reveal that one of his articles, which might not have been entirely accurate, played a minor part in the events that led to her resignation and replacement by John Major.

In October of that year Mrs Thatcher was becoming increasingly isolated within the European Community (as the EU was known)
