Opinion polls have painted a gloomy picture of the prime minister’s future but his death knell may now have sounded, as a list of the most popular dog names shows Boris has fallen from the public’s favour.

Johnson’s first name rose in popularity after he became MP in 2015, with 313 puppies christened Boris in the year after the 2019 general election. But as his popularity in opinion polls fell, so did the number of canine Borises, with only 123 recorded last year.

The research, by the pet insurer Agria, also found coronavirus-themed names entering the charts in 2020, with people calling their dogs Corona and Covid, and although these failed to appear last year, new additions to the list include Pfizer and Zeneca.
