Unions have condemned the “fat-cat” university executives who reversed the wage cuts they took at the beginning of the pandemic as they warned staff of pay freezes and redundancies.

Professor Peter Mathieson, the principal of the University of Edinburgh, said that the scale of the financial crisis meant they would have to “think the unthinkable” in cutting costs.

Last April Mathieson, whose salary is in excess of £340,000, announced that he would reduce his wages by 20 per cent and said that the university’s annual income could fall by up to £150 million. He suggested that buildings could be put up for sale and staff numbers reduced.

Yesterday The Times disclosed that Mathieson’s salary had returned to its original level.
