A huge fire at a landfill site in Belgrade has sent clouds of toxic smoke over the city, as the southern European heatwave continues to ignite blazes across the Balkans.

Some residents have fled the Serbian capital since the fire broke out in Vinca, seven miles from the city centre, ten days ago. Although fire crews have largely extinguished the blaze, the dump is smouldering, releasing fumes from plastic, chemicals and manure.

Particles of dioxins, which can cause cancer, are registering at the highest level, experts say, and doctors report that their patients are coming to them with breathing problems.
