An undercover police officer tricked an activist whose group he had infiltrated into having sex in 2015, shortly before Theresa May announced a public inquiry into the scandal.

The Metropolitan Police officer, who was using the pseudonym Rob Harrison, contacted his former girlfriend out of the blue, had sex with her and vanished again. He did so despite years of public scrutiny about the tactics of covert units, including the strategy of tricking women into relationships.

Yesterday the Undercover Policing Inquiry was told of the trauma suffered by the families of dead children whose identities were assumed by officers. Many visited the child’s home town to familiarise themselves with the area.
