Further walk-in Covid-19 test centres on the west coast will open this week in a move to control the virus, detect new variants and measure public interest in asymptomatic checks.

As of late last week, over 50,000 people have used the “walk-in” tests across the state and 1,628 positive cases of Covid-19 have been detected, a rate of 3.4 per cent, the health service said.

Pilot centres will open this week in Co Galway, two locations in Co Mayo and in Co Roscommon without the need for appointments for people who are asymptomatic.

The HSE said that it was “aware” that one pilot centre opening today at Galway Airport in Carnmore was accessible only by car with no public transport linking it to the city
