John Boyega quits as Jo Malone ambassador in row over Chinese ad

John Boyega has quit as a brand ambassador for the perfume brand Jo Malone after he was removed from the Chinese version of an aftershave advertisement for the company.

Boyega, 28, said that he understood why the firm would wish to use local actors in different regions but said that the decision to replace him with a Chinese star was made without his knowledge or consent.

The commercial featured Boyega travelling through his home town of London and featured personal touches including appearances by his family.

Advertisers frequently remove black people or make them less prominent in marketing materials in China. Disney, for example, altered its poster for the film Star Wars: The Force Awakens so that Boyega, who plays Finn, a former stormtrooper, had
