The beleaguered Scottish Labour leader Richard Leonard could be ousted by a vote of no confidence next weekend.

Critics are determined to remove Leonard to avert a disaster in May’s Holyrood election, after support for the party slumped to a new low under his leadership.

The Sunday Times revealed last weekend that a delegation of Labour MSPs had met Leonard to urge him to quit. Last week four MSPs publicly called for his resignation.

The party’s ruling Scottish executive meets next Saturday, and senior party figures are considering a confidence motion. The meeting will also determine how Labour selects its proportional representation list candidates for next year’s election, which Leonard’s supporters claim is at the heart of calls to remove him.
