Belarus president booed as he defies calls to resign

Strikes and protests spread across country as Alexander Lukashenko refuses to step down

The president of Belarus expressed defiance over calls for him to resign this morning, saying he would have to be killed for a fresh election to take place as he was booed by crowds.

Alexander Lukashenko told workers at a tractor plant: “We held elections already. Until you kill me, there will be no other elections,” according to the local news website tut.by.

The leader was trying to shore up support as strikes spread across the former Soviet country following a huge opposition rally in the capital Minsk yesterday. At the tractor plant, he was forced to stop in the middle of his address because his voice was drowned out by chants demanding he quit and booing.
