For 93 years the Strand Bookstore in New York has stood as a landmark to generations of readers, surviving the war, the Depression and the onslaught of online competition.

When the pandemic threatened to write its final chapter, fans mobilised, placing more than 25,000 orders in one weekend to help to save it.

“We are truly feeling the support of our community. My heart is so full,” Nancy Bass Wyden, the owner, said.

Strand was founded in 1927 and has stood at its present location since 1957. Boasting 18 miles of books, including rare collectibles and sales of “books by the foot”, it was founded by her grandfather Benjamin Bass, an immigrant from Lithuania, using $300 cash and a $300 loan. He passed it to
