Rome’s car drivers, infamous for their double parking and some of the worst crash statistics in Europe, are shifting their dubious talents to electric scooters.

In the month since they emerged from lockdown to find 4,000 scooters ready for rent, there has been an average of about one collision per day involving an injury and the police.

“We have had pedestrians hit by scooters, scooters hit by cars and scooters ridden by more than one person at the same time,” Stefano Marin, a Rome councillor, said. “Sustainable transport is really welcome but not if it becomes a dangerous invasion of our streets.”
