A-level results: China drives surprise rise in international university students

Hundreds more overseas students accepted places at British universities, despite fears that they would be deterred by the coronavirus pandemic.

Overall, 700 more people from countries outside the European Union were given places at UK institutions than last year, taking the total number to 34,310.

However, there were 4,000 fewer from the EU than on the same day last year, with 22,430 allocated places yesterday, down from 26,440 in 2019.

China continued to drive the growth in overseas numbers, despite anger from the country’s government towards British leaders over Huawei and unrest in Hong Kong.

Universities have so far accepted 8,570 Chinese students, an increase of 14 per cent on the 7,490 with places on the same day last year, according to data from
