A Muslim student self-isolating in halls of residence was handed ham sandwiches while a vegan was given a Mars bar and a croissant, it has emerged.

Hundreds of undergraduates around the country have been asked to stay indoors following a spate of virus outbreaks in university accommodation.

It has led to claims that some have been forced to go hungry because the food packages delivered to them do not meet their religious or dietary needs.

Concern over the situation prompted Nicola Sturgeon to insist there was no excuse for universities not to look after the welfare of their students.
