Two of Britain’s most revered military units were not prepared for the latest episode in their longstanding rivalry.

The Latin words Utrinque paratus — “ready for anything” — have appeared beneath The Parachute Regiment’s winged crest since its formation during the Second World War.

However, the cherished motto has appeared in an advertising campaign by the Royal Marines, which launched an online recruitment drive last week featuring a commando with the words “Ready for anything? Apply now.”

The Parachute Regiment, the British Army’s airborne infantry unit, used its official Twitter account to say that it was “amused” to see that the Marines had used the slogan.

“No escaping that it is the best motto there is. It’s healthy to have someone to look up to,”
