King Philippe of Belgium’s car was hit by stones during riots in Brussels last night after the death of a young black man in police custody at the weekend.

A police station was set on fire during the violence in the north of the capital and water cannon were used to break up the protests that caused widespread damage.

The king’s car — which bears the distinctive number plate, “1” — was struck as he was driven through the Schaerbeek area on the way to his residence at the Palace of Laeken but police prevented protesters from stopping the limousine.
