President Erdogan’s son-in-law has abruptly quit as Turkey’s economy minister in a sign of turmoil inside the presidential palace as well as the country’s economic woes.

Berat Albayrak, 42, became one of the country’s most unpopular figures after two years at the helm of the Treasury during which the Turkish lira lost 45 per cent of its value against the US dollar.

The lira strengthened yesterday after news of his resignation, although government-supporting media put this down to the firing of the governor of the central bank.
