The new Tory MP Sarah Dines might have been expected to be mindful of her reliance on the public purse.

Dines, 55, who was elected last year to represent Derbyshire Dales in the East Midlands, recently declared: “Our hard-earned taxpayers’ money should be spent wisely. Our voters expect this.”

A barrister from an Essex farming family, she owns six homes, one of which is in London and another an hour’s drive from the capital. She also owns land that brings the value of her portfolio to an estimated £5m.

However, that has not stopped Dines charging the taxpayer thousands of pounds for regular stays at a four-star hotel near parliament over the past year.

Her chosen destination is the Park Plaza on Westminster Bridge, which
