More than half of people who pose a high risk of infecting others with coronavirus do not report any symptoms, a government study has found.

Just 47 per cent of Scottish adults found with a high viral load reported feeling unwell within 35 days of a positive test in an Office for National Statistics (ONS) mass-testing programme. The results suggest that thousands were unwittingly infecting others.

The number reporting the most common symptoms — a cough, a fever and breathlessness — was even lower at 43 per cent. Only 22 per cent reported a loss of taste or smell.
