Brexit: Wartime airfield is to be a lorry park for delays

A former military airfield is lined up to become an emergency lorry park if Brexit causes delays at Cairnryan port.

The plan, dubbed Operation Overflow, would involve hundreds of vehicles being parked up temporarily to ease congestion.

Transport Scotland has an agreement “in principle” to use Castle Kennedy Airfield if traffic between Scotland and Northern Ireland begins to build up.

The proposal has been formulated to try to mitigate any potential impact if the Dumfries and Galloway port is unable to cope when the transition period to leave the European Union ends on January 1.
