The country was besieged by a little-understood enemy; politicians dithered; the public were bewildered; and America was late to the party. Step forward Tom Moore, willing to do his bit for king and country. That was 1939, when the Second World War broke out.

More than eight decades later, as Moore approached his 100th birthday, the country was once more besieged by a little-understood enemy; politicians dithered; the public were bewildered; and America was again late to the party. This time the fight was against Covid-19 and the immediate battle was to protect the country’s treasured National Health Service from being overwhelmed. Step forward once more “Captain Tom” to do his bit for Queen and country.
